Danger Mouse & Jemini - Ghetto Pop Life (2004)

Let’s put it simply, Ghetto Pop Life is one hell of a record. In sixteen tracks spread over just under an hour, MC Jemini and producer extraordinaire Danger Mouse rewrite the whole history of hip-hop only to pull it apart again and again. Released on the excellent hip-hop arm of Warp, Lex, Ghetto Pop Life is simply the best album the label has released so far, and it is not a small performance. With this first collaboration, Danger Mouse and Jemini offer an interesting take on hip-hop, classic and modern, and produce one of the most exhilarating albums of the year so far. Their unique blend of sounds and rhymes is utterly essential, whether you’re into hip-hop or not.

Gorillaz - Demon Days (2005)

A side project doesn't usually hit gold, especially when said project is a quirky virtual collective fronted by cartoon characters. But the first, self-titled album by Gorillaz--the brainchild of illustrator Jamie Hewlett and Blur frontman Damon Albarn--actually hit platinum and turned into a surprise worldwide hit. Naturally expectations were a lot higher for Gorillaz's sophomore effort, but Demon Days actually is even better than its predecessor. With producer Dan "the Automator" Nakamura gone, Albarn, a.k.a. 2D, has paired up with DJ Danger Mouse (responsible for the infamous Grey Album that illegally mixed the Beatles and Jay-Z) to steer the musical ship, while a whole new slew of guests enlivens the proceedings. Albarn has described Demon Days as being darker, but there's a real kooky dance-party vibe coursing through the CD.

Mano Negra - The Best Of Mano Negra (1998)

During their time together in the late '80s and early '90s, the French band with the Spanish name and Manu Chao as group leader gave real meaning to the term ethno-punk. Imagine the Clash fired not only by reggae and rockabilly, but also rai, dub, hip-hop, and a strongly Latin sensibility, and you have a picture of Mano Negra. This compilation collects tracks from five of their albums that indicate not only the breadth of their vision, but also the musical range, and the passion that informed everything they did. More than the start of rock en Español, this is the full multiculti punk experience. The band may no longer be around, but a listen to this shows that the spirit can't be extinguished. Sublime - Sublime (1996) Rapidshare Download

Sublime is the hit album released by the eponymous band. It was originally intended to be called Killin' It, but the band and record label agreed to respectfully substitute an eponymous title due to lead singer Bradley Nowell's death before the album's release. The album was a major commercial success, going five times platinum in 1999 and etching Sublime into a permanent place among the stars of mid-90s alternative rock. Its most popular single, "What I Got", was an uncharacteristically poppy song; the bulk of the album was faithful to Sublime's ska, dub, and reggae influences, with tempos ranging from the frantic — such as "Seed," "Same in the End," and "Paddle Out" — to the slow and deliberate, such as "Pawn Shop" and "Jailhouse." "Jailhouse", is a cover of a Bob Marley song which can be found on many Bob Marley albums including "The Wailing Wailers at Studio One, Vol. 2".
The musical styles throughout the album vary nearly as much as the subjects discussed, ranging from the mellow Hip Hop groove of "Doin' Time" and reggae beat of "Caress Me Down" to the pop-rock "What I Got" and the hardcore punk sound of "Paddle Out". The genre-crossing musical diversity expressed on the album is one of the more compelling reasons for the record's wide mainstream appeal. Amy Winehouse - Back to Black (2007) Rapidshare Download

Amy Winehouse - Back to Black

Amy Winehouse's second album, Back to Black, is one of the finest soul albums, British or otherwise, to come out for years. Frank, her first album, was a sparse and stripped-down affair; Back to Black, meanwhile, is neither of these things. This time around, she's taken her inspiration from some of the classic 1960's girl groups like the Supremes and the Shangri-Las, a sound particularly suited to her textured vocal delivery, while adding a contemporary songwriting sensibility. With the help of producers Mark Ronson and Salaam Remi, "Rehab" becomes a gospel-tinged stomp, while the title track (and album highlight) is a heartbreaking musical tribute to Phil Spector, with it's echoey bass drum, rhythmic piano, chimes, saxophone and close harmonies. Best of all, though, is the fact that Back to Black bucks the current trend in R&B by being unabashedly grown-up in both style and content. Winehouse's lyrics deal with relationships from a grown-up perspective, and are honest, direct and, often, complicated: on "You Know I'm No Good", she's unapologetic about her unfaithfulness. But she can also be witty, as on "Me & Mrs Jones" when she berates a boyfriend with "You made me miss the Slick Rick gig". Back to Black is a refreshingly mature soul album, the best of its kind for years. --Ted Kord
