Staff Benda Bilili is a group formed by homeless and disabled polio victims living in the grounds of Kinshasa Zoo. Their music combines reggae, rumba, soul and funk with traditional African rhythms as accessibly and joyously as Bob Marley or Buena Vista Social Club. The songs were recorded out in the open, using a dozen microphones, a MacBook and a 100m extension cord fraudulously connected to a deserted refreshment bar nearby. Nearing his 40th birthday, Rodney Smith a.k.a Roots Manuva has delivered a contemplative and insightful album. Skid Valley, a sketch of life outside the bubble in 2011, ends with the couplet: "Low pay packets and high inflation/ And now they want to blame us for the end of the nation." Wha' Mek domesticises this insecurity: "What makes you sigh ... When I'm trying my hardest, it's the best that I can be." Even club banger Get the Get ends with an exasperated: "I am somebody." There's an impressive range of styles here – an overdose of maudlin strings, perhaps, but there would at least appear to be a reason for that.

Studio One is one of Jamaica's most renowned record labels and recording studios, having been described as "the Motown of Jamaica."

Studio One was involved with most of the major music movements in Jamaica during the 1960s and 1970s, including ska, rocksteady, reggae, dub and dancehall. The label was founded by Clement "Coxsone" Dodd in 1954, and the first recordings were cut in 1957 on Brentford Road in Kingston (wanna know more? wikipedia!).

Organized Konfusion was an alternative hip hop duo from Queens, New York. Though not commercially popular, the duo was one of the most respected and acclaimed underground hip hop acts of the 1990s, largely due to the duo's intelligent rhymes, and the groundbreaking lyricism of Pharoahe Monch.

The group's third album, The Equinox, was released in 1997. The album featured an ambitious concept, complete with numerous storytelling skits. The tracks are pure underground hip hop jewels from the golden era. Dope! Get it.

The Brooklyn duo Cella Dwellas first appeared on a Masta Ace b-side and released their debut "Realms `N Reality" in 1996. "Realms `N Reality" is a criminally underrated album that slipped under the radar upon release but is in my opinion among the best records of its period. The LP is aptly titled--the 16 tracks are split between mystical, abstract songs and hard-hitting boom bap. The tracklist runs an hour long, during which there is not one weak song and every track seems just as good as the last.

Looking Up (1994-2000) - Discography

Looking Up was a belgian 6 piece ska-punk band, famous in the 90s on the underground belgian skate scene, as most of its members were skaters themselves, the famous ones being the Dykmans brothers : Julian, lead singer of the group, and Ian who played the guitar. They gave energic gigs all around Europe and played with bands like Millencolin, Voodoo Glow Skulls, or Hardcore band Wise Up.

Looking Up released only one official album, 'Got Another Answer' on the prestigious punk label Epitaph/I Scream in 1998. Their second album was unofficially released in 2000, after the band split. Some of their songs were featured on Punk compilations like Punk-O-Rama, and skate videos parts such as Geoffrey Van Hove on Cliché Europa.

Light Show is the first song off of the forthcoming Pigeon Hole album 'Age Like Astronauts.' Album is set for release June 15th on URBNET Records and features D-Sisive, Moka Only, and Mos Eisley of Sweatshop Union.

The video is directed by Stuey Kubrick and was shot in the basement of the Astoria on the downtown east side of Vancouver. There are cameos by Moka Only, Sweatshop Union, Birdapres & more.

Psych Funk Sa-Re-Ga! mines decades-old venturesome, clamorous Indian psychedelic funk music. Pressed to vinyl between 1970 and 1983, much of this work was utilized for Bollywood soundtracking purposes during those years. Just as local psychedelic acts took cues from the nearby flourishing Hindi film industry, the region’s film composers were drawn to the sound filtering out of clubs stationed in Mumbai and Poona (now Pune). The comp offers a wealth of the screeching guitar tones and blurting organs you’d expect, with spirited and blissful head trips peppering its 20 thoroughly researched selections.

Psych-Funk 101 (1968-1975) is the debut release from World Psychedelic Funk Classics and presents itself as 'a global psychedelic funk curriculum', complete with a 'course description' and 'supplemental listening' in its copious notes (found either on the handsome gatefold sleeve of the vinyl or the 36-page booklet of the CD). The title may be a little misleading since some tracks contain funk and some contain psych with a geniune melding of the two not always apparent, but nonetheless this is chock full of amazing and eye-opening stuff.

Jahtari - Hot Jahtari Riddims Mixtape

Jahtari is a Netlabel, founded in 2004 by Jan Gleichmar aka "Disrupt". Unlike most netlabels, it focuses on the dub and reggae music genres, with an electronic music approach which it calls "digital laptop reggae", using Commodore 64 or 8-bits sounding softwares to produce the beats. The whole Jahtari catalogue is available for online listening and downloading on their site...impressive openness.

By 2006, Jahtari had started to offer a release on CD in addition to the free downloads, and later produced vinyl releases too. As of 2008, it had signed more than 20 artists, among them Soom T, Pupajim, Bo Marley,or Mungo's Hifi.

I recently found back the firsts underground hip hop compilations I did, while ago, when I was spending my evenings downloading stuff on Soulseek, and getting educated by the hip hop freaks of the Hip Hop room (big up to all the members!). 6 years later, they sound as good as they did before, so I decided to make them available to everyone passing by my blog. Download the first volume HERE :)

Some tunes come from Wu-Tang gold era (Method Man's Tical, Genius/GZA Liquid Swords, Heltah Skeltah, Gravediggaz,...), Stone Throw beginnings (Madlib & MF Doom, Wildchild), some are -bit- more mainstream (Rah Digga, Ice Cube), and a few tracks come from Great Britain (Shorty, Tame One, P Brothers). Anyway, all those tunes are, in my opinion, some of the finest Hip Hop tracks that will be ever created. Among many, many others, I must say. Svinkels' style is radically different than the vast majority of French hip-hop. They are composed by 3 alcoholic MC's, and DJ Pone (also part of Birdy Nam Nam DJ collective). They are well known for their absurd, non politically correct lyrics, word plays, cartoonish flows, and Rock'n'Roll attitude. They could be considered as the french Beastie Boys, as their influences go from the Wu-Tang to french punk veterans, Berurier Noir. The Svinkels define their own music as "dirty-core" or "slip-hop". This excellent album gathers unrealeased tracks, B-sides, and remixes by DJ Pone, coming from 1997-2005 period.

The finest MC to ever hail from Canada compiled his best underground works to give to the masses in this hard to find LP. His style very reminiscent of a top notch New York MC of the mid to late 90's, Saukrates holds his own next to some of the big apples best, and one of the west's nicest. Everyone from Masta Ace, Common, Xzibit and Pharoahe Monch stop through to assist Saukrates, but the true highlights of the tape are when Sauk zones out on his own. Anyone doubting the hip-hop cred that this Canadian-born, lyrical juggernaut wields hasn't heard his stuff.

The Ragga Jungle style is credited with engaging the black community within the Jungle scene, and contributed to the 'bad boy' or 'rude boy' subculture within the UK. Ragga Jungle's popularity waned significantly since 1995 in the UK. Ragga Jungle is now a niche sound, with a small number of labels releasing music that can be categorised in this manner. Prominent producers of this new-school sound are continuing to build bridges, often re-voicing classic reggae singers to produce new works for exclusive use (as "Dubplates") and retail sale as 12" vinyl singles and downloadable mp3's.

I have been listening to Dj Yoda since his first 'How to cut & paste' mixtapes, that I highly recommend (check out Vol1 and Vol2 if you're not familiar). He has always been weirdish. This 30s edition goes one step further into Dj Yoda's abilities to mix the most unexpected tunes with brilliant consistency.

‘The 30s Edition’ is more bearable than ‘The 80s Edition’ (which was still dope) and it’s a real light listen, especially if you want to have a bit a laugh at the sort of jaunty music they used to make. Yoda makes for additional comedy as he scratches samples and drops ridiculous beats over the original tracks.
Stand-out selections are ‘Cheesecake’ by Louis Armstrong (pure hilarity) and Moondog’s ‘Lament 1, Bird’s Lament’ (the original sample from Mr Scruff’s ‘Get a Move On’). Speaking of sample sources, Thelonious Monk’s ‘Black and Tan Fantasy’ (of Wu-Tang Clan's ‘Shame On A Nigga’) fame also crops up. You’ll also enjoy the one-two combo of Fats Waller’s ‘Reefer Song’ and Cab Calloway’s ‘Reefer Man’ for the possibly unintentional drug references, or originals tunes that Moby or the Fugees have been sampling in the past.

Kid Koala DJ Set @ Kset (Bootleg 2005)

The live you will download below is a never released bootleg from Kid Koala's first visit to Zagreb, Croatia, in a small student union for croatian nerds (KSET).

The mix features excellent Kid Koala Dj skills, mixing various tunes including Bjork, White Stripes, A Tribe Called Quest, Cure, Slayer, his own drunk trumpet solo scratches, Deltron 3030, and some weird random tunes. Great mix. The playlist is really cool, but I didnt have energy nor knowledge to write the whole thing down. The mix is already 5 years old but hey, good music never dies! The quality of the sound is decent too.

I bought this rare collection of 70s underground funky tunes in London and wanted to share those grooves with anybody who had the great idea to visit the blog. Small Potato Records is a London based funk label releasing underground funk compilations, unfoundable online or in stores. If you want to get more of them, I guess your only option is to go to London Brick Lane market, and follow the funk!

Cambodian Rocks Compilation - Various Artists

In 1996, the Parallel World label released the LP "Cambodian Rocks", a collection of Cambodian psych and garage music from the 60s and early 70s (probably), compiled by an American tourist named Paul Wheeler from some cassettes he bought in Phnom Penh. No information on the songs was provided at all, no artist names, no song titles, and no recording dates. Four years later, Parallel World reissued this compilation on CD with a few extra tracks, but still without any identifying information. Unfortunately, it is more than likely that many of the featured musicians, showing a definite Western influence in their music, were murdered by the Khmer Rouge regime which took over power in 1975. Certainly none of them ever received any money from the sales of this compilation. However, the music is wonderful, and here it is for your enjoyment.

Blockhead has long made beautiful, emotive music based around the hip hop template, but on “The Music Scene” he elevates his craft to another level. Tony puts it down to the use of Ableton, which means that rather than working from “one basic beat and building off it” (the standard hip hop model), he has begun stringing together multiple beats and weaving them together into increasingly complex, surprising and satisfying pieces of music. Poc, Moc, and Chip Fu of Fu-Schnickens are three young Brooklyn men who spent their childhood watching way too much television. Their raps riff on karate flicks, monster movies, Batman, Bugs Bunny, sitcoms, and cereal commercials--in other words, they spout the common mythology of Americans 29 and under. For those in that demographic, Fu's raps clear a trail into the dark recesses of memory lane. For those who don't get it, though, the trio's second album, Nervous Breakdown, is much more than a catalog of the collective Gen-X unconscious. On the record we hear three distinct personalities, all lightning-paced rappers with tremendous control of their voices. For the fans of Das EFX, Yaggfu Front, and Lords of the Underground, there's plenty of fun to be found in this album. This really reflects what a great time 1994 was for hip hop.

Killing in the Name campaign

In December 2009, a campaign was launched on Facebook and Twitter by Jon and Tracy Morter which generated nationwide publicity and took the track "Killing in the Name" to the coveted Christmas Number One slot in the UK Singles Chart, which had been dominated for four consecutive years from 2005 by winners from the popular TV show The X Factor. Before the chart was announced on 20 December 2009 the Facebook group membership stood at over 950,000, and was acknowledged (and supported) by Tom Morello, Dave Grohl, Paul McCartney,Muse, Fightstar, NME, John Lydon, Bill Bailey, Lenny Henry, BBC Radio 1, Hadouken!, The Prodigy, Stereophonics, BBC Radio 5 Live, and even the 2004 X Factor winner Steve Brookstein, amongst numerous others. Musicians contributing include the usual deep blowing brass section, Dave Fullwood and Bigga alongside, P Lush of Nucleus roots fame on guitar, keyboards from Paolo Polcari of Almamegretta, drums from Vedran of the Radikal Dub Kolektiv and melodicas from Chasbo of the Bush Chemists. It also features musicians from Italy, Germany, Croatia, Jamaica and the UK. Another surprise in the form of a Hervé side project: ‘The Young Lovers’. For a white English man (with a Beatles haircut) who makes mix CDs with titles like Ghetto Bass, Joshua ‘Hervé’ Harvey certainly knows how to confound expectations. With a strong jazz influence joining the dots between the dangling beats and smoky atmospherics, this more reflective side project shows a far more interesting side to the sonic trickery the young producer has used to such effect on tracks such as "Bleeper". In fact, there is just the barest hint of fidgety sounds to be found, and even then they work in the subtlest of ways: underpinning swinging beats and scratchy percussion. Of all Hervé has done careerwise, it is this which will stand the test of time and quite rightly too.

It seems like such a natural progression for French hip-hop to take off--after all, there's only so many MCs out there with anything original to say or a novel way of saying it, so the flow of the rapper's patter is easily as important as what they're rapping about. French, with its cultivated smoothness, sounds beautiful and naturally flows from thought to thought; chanted over beats, the effect can be sublime--even if the listener doesn't understand a word. Though most dedicated hip-hop fans are familiar with MC Solaar, it might be the Saian Supa Crew who spread le message. The SSC are a six-man collective (three MCs, one vocalist and two vocal percussionists, who "sing" sound effects) who have internalized influences from a wide variety of forefathers: the Roots and Jurassic 5, for a wide-open, old-school feel and a respect for hip-hop history; DJ Premier and the Wu-Tang Clan, for the production on "G-Padpo" and "Darkness"; even the playfulness of Prince Paul. It's a lot to display on one album, and some songs work better than others--but there are more than enough winners here

X Raisons is an exuberant, joyous second album from the Parisian rap crew that mix hip-hop, reggae and north (Zouk and Rai) and western African influences. Formed in the late 90s the six-man multicultural group integrate the old and the new of hip-hop, slotting classic beatbox alongside production that rumbles somewhere between the Wu Tang Clan and the Fugees. "Soldat 1" (Soldier 1) even uses a slight touch of Dr Dre's "The Next Episode" as its hook. This is a bold, ambitious album. Saian operate without musical restrictions, unafraid to sing, shout or switch tempos, best exemplified by the grandiose power play of "Maladie", the twinkley piano-led "Du 14 02 2002", the chanson swing of "A Demi Nue" (the half nude), the African chants of "Mohammed et Sebastien" and the quasi Miami bass of "A cow'mow (Hami sow bo)". The Jimi Hendrix beat box insert is also hilarious. X Raisons is a playful, cheeky album that neatly contrasts the heavyweight output of contemporaries such as IAM and Busta Flex. Clearly the French language proves a barrier to non-French speakers and Saian Supa Crew make little lyrical effort to appeal to an international audience. But this is a strength and not a weakness--X Raisons might not be so interesting if it were trying to capture the massive English speaking hip-hop market. However, the group are to release an international album next year and have already recorded a track with the UK's Roots Manuva.

On this new epic voyage Disrupt is pushing the genre boundaries of 8Bit-ChipHop, roots Dub and old-school gaming soundtracks into one big swirling Black Hole of low end mayhem. Raw, ultra-shuffling drum machine action and re-wired skanks create the gateway for a mind bending reference network of retro-SciFi movies, gaming classics and Dub soundscapes in infinite loop mode. Radio Retaliation is a record of righteous fury (the targets are political, if that even needs to be said) and one that makes their previous efforts sound like Discreet Music in comparison. Thievery amps up their beats, quickens the pace, and unleashes a phalanx of vocal features to attack the D.C.-based Corporation's crosstown rivals on Capitol Hill and at 1600 Pennsylvania
Ave. (Granted, this is still a revolution mostly in the head.) The mélange of worldbeat influences finds all the usual traces (Jamaica, India, Brazil, Nigeria, Arabia), but virtually all of the locales are charted by natives (Sleepy Wonder, Anoushka Shankar, Seu Jorge, Femi Kuti). On the title track, narcoleptic chatter Sleepy Wonder details his list of grievances, speaking for the entire corporation: "50,000 watts of Thievery hit them like poison darts/And watch the whole system what them build up fall apart." The two most important features are Femi Kuti's and Seu Jorge's; first, Kuti uses the track "Vampires" to call out African genocide throughout history (from Kinshasa to Darfur to Lagos to Malabo, Guinea), then Jorge comes next with the yin to emi's yang, a beatific ode to peace titled "Hare Krsna." Thievery producers Rob Garza Eric Hilton
haven't quite revolutionized their beat-making or production from the past decade, but they sound energized by the political and social events of the 2000s. Despite the politics, there are still a few more of the ethereal masterpieces Thievery Corporation have made a hallmark in the past, including the sublime "Beautiful Drug" (featuring Slovakian singer Jana Andevska) and "Mandala," a guest feature for Anoushka Shankar that's particularly refreshing as an alternative to the usual Indian atmosphere on downbeat records (sampled, not played).
